Danish containership giant AP Moller-Maersk is in talks with Russa's Atomflot over a new Arctic shipping service.

It told Reuters that it could send more cargoes via the Northern Sea Route (NSR) in partnership with Atomflot's icebreaker operator Rosatomflot.

“We have experienced growing demand for transport of goods from the Far East to West Russia, which we are currently exploring the possibilities of offering together with Atomflot,” it said.

There are no currently plans to deploy Maersk vessels in commercial service along the route, however.

The move follows a successful trial of a Maersk boxship through the NSR last summer.

But it said at that time it did not see the route as a viable commercial proposition.
