Hong Kong-based bulker owner Chellaram Shipping has fetched a higher-than-expected price for a Japanese-built, 11-year-old supramax bulker.

US brokers said the company has sold the 56,000-dwt Darya Mahesh (built 2008) for $12.5m, which is described as a “top dollar” price.

VesselsValue says a ship of the the Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding-constructed Darya Mahesh's characteristics is worth $11.5m. Maritime Strategies International (MSI) put it at $11.2m to $13.6m.

The Darya Mahesh is not due for special survey until May 2023. The identity of the buyer is unclear. So far, Chellaram has not commented on the reported sale.

A number of deals concluded by the Hong Kong-based shipowner appears to go under the radar, and both the Darya Mahesh and the sistership Darya Lakshemi (built 2009) were ordered by Chellaram in off-market deals.

The company is listed with 13 bulkers ranging in size from handysize to kamsarmax, with an average age of five years.

The sale comes after Chellaram offloaded the Mitsui-built, 56,000-dwt Darya Brahma (built 2006) to Bahtera Adhiguna of Indonesia for $10.8m.
