Former Golden Ocean CEO Birgitte Ringstad Vartdal has found a new role in the renewables sector.

She will become executive vice president for European wind and solar at Norwegian green power company Statkraft on 1 April.

Ringstad Vartdal quit the John Fredriksen bulker owner at the end of November. She was chief financial officer at the company from 2010, before being promoted to the top job in 2016.

She is succeeding Steinar Bysveen, who has resigned at EVP at Statkraft.

The executive has also held various management positions in Torvald Klaveness and worked for Hydro Energi.

"I am very pleased to welcome Birgitte on the team, who will lead a very important part of our growth strategy going forward,” said Statkraft CEO Christian Rynning-Tonnesen.

Statkraft wants to become one of the world’s leading renewables companies by 2025.

“Statkraft has an ambitious strategy and unique position for further growth within renewable energy. I am very much looking forward to embarking on this task and contribute to this growth together with the rest of the organisation,” Ringstad Vartdal said.

Statkraft produces hydropower, wind power, solar power, gas-fired power and supplies district heating.

Golden Ocean chairman Ola Lorentzon has become the interim CEO until a successor is found.

Vartdal still available for Golden Ocean

Ringstad Vartdal had said she would remain "available" to the company until the end of February 2020.

She told TradeWinds at the time: “The decision to quit Golden Ocean Group is entirely my own.

“Everything is in order in the company that I took over in 2016, and I have delivered on the goals I set for myself when I started.”

She said the decision to quit had matured over time and that the final decision was given to the board before the release of the third quarter results.
