A Royal Boskalis Westminster dredger has been attacked with rocks and molotov cocktails after an environmental protest descended into violence off Indonesia.

Police arrested 12 fishermen and activists after the incident in South Sulawesi involving the 60,000-dwt hopper unit Queen of the Netherlands (built 1998) on Saturday.

Some of the missiles caused a minor fire on deck, the Suaro website reported.

The protesters wanted dredging operations halted.

South Sulawesi police public relations officer Kombes Ibrahim Tompo told reporters some members of the group also cut pneumatic power lines to cause the ship to be unable to dredge sand on one side.

He said the incident took place when the vessel left Makasar New Port to its work site at Taka Copong Takalar.

Protests common

"This action often takes place, but it is unfortunate why it must be criminal," said Tompo.

He added it would be best if protests did not cause disturbances and break the law.

Suaro reported some of the group were from Indonesia's Walhi, an affiliate of environmental group Friends of the Earth.

The crew had called in authorities, who arrived to find the chaos still ongoing.

Boskalis has been contacted for further information.

The vessel is insured by the Standard Club.
