A former CMA CGM boxship has grounded off Vietnam while under tow to a recycling yard.

Video footage shows the 1,118-teu Jakarta (built 2002) with a cracked hull and a broken back on the coast north of Danang.

The former CMA CGM Jakarta had puzzled local authorities who found it washed up with no crew on board

But the owner, Indian cash buyer NKD Maritime, later confirmed the vessel had gone aground during very heavy weather and sea conditions on 10 October.

"The vessel was under tow at the time of the incident and no crew were on board. We understand that all crew members from the towage vessel are well and accounted for," NKD added.

"The authorities and all relevant organisations have been contacted and are providing assistance."

Salvors brought in

The company added: "Salvors have been appointed and will attend the vessel as soon as the weather conditions permit."

The ship is not carrying any cargo or fuel, but the buyer said every effort will be made to protect the marine environment.

Clarksons lists the vessel as sold to CMA CGM in 2018 for $4m.

VesselsValue assesses it as worth $2.06m for scrap.

The boxship was formerly insured with Norwegian protection and indemnity club Gard, but is no longer with the club.
