Preparations were being made on Thursday to remove fuel from a grounded cargoship off Corsica.

The 3,000-dwt Rhodanus (built 1998) steamed ashore over the weekend near Bonifacio after missing a turn, despite 50 minutes of warnings from traffic controllers.

A company named as SEA d'Ajaccio has been brought in by the owner and insurers to handle the operation.

The French navy has set up a boom and the Mediterranean maritime authority has prohibited all navigation within a radius of 1km of the vessel.

No pollution has been detected.

Rhodanus is loaded with 2,600 tons of steel coils. There were seven crew on board.

It is listed as managed by West-Trade Logistic of Germany and owned by Rhodanus Interscan UG.
