The owner and insurer of a grounded cargoship are working on a salvage plan in Corsica.

The French Mediterranean maritime authority said operations continue to secure the site near Bonifacio where the 3,000-dwt Rhodanus (built 1998) steamed ashore after missing a turn, despite 50 minutes of warnings from traffic controllers.

Salvors have been contacted to come up with a plan to refloat the ship, which needs to be lightered.

Naval personnel have boarded the unit and divers have carried out further inspections.

No pollution has been detected.

A temporary beacon system has been set up to establish an access channel.

The vessel is loaded with 2,600 tons of steel coils. There were seven crew on board.

It is listed as managed by West-Trade Logistic of Germany and owned by Rhodanus Interscan UG.
