A police investigation has concluded that the captain of a tour boat was not responsible for a collision with a Viking River Cruises ship that killed 28 people in Hungary in May.

The unnamed captain of the Hableany was himself one of the victims of the accident on the Danube that involved the Viking Sigyn.

All but two of those killed were South Korean tourists.

Adrian Pal of Budapest Police told AP that the probe involves 11,000 pages of documentation and more than 4,200 photos.

The Ukrainian master of Viking Sigyn, named only as Yuri C, 64, remains the only suspect.

No alcohol or drugs were found in samples taken from him, police said.

He is under pre-trial arrest until at least 30 November.

Pal said the captain has claimed several times in his testimony that that he "simply did not notice" the smaller vessel.

A radar alert system was on, but its sound was turned off, he has added.

Torstein Hagen's Viking Ocean Cruises hit the headlines in March when its 944-berth Viking Sky (built 2017) lost engine power off Hustadvika, Norway, prompting the airlift of 479 passengers to land.

About 20 others were taken to hospital for injuries.
