A Norwegian-owned containership is still under detention by Turkish authorities nearly one month after it ran aground near Istanbul.

The 2,000-teu Songa Iridium (built 2008) ran into trouble on 27 December when it suffered an engine room fire and lost power.

Turkey’s Directorate General of Coastal Safety dispatched four tugs to tow the Liberia-flagged vessel to the anchorage in Istanbul.

The vessels is currently on charter to Taiwanese shipowner Yang Ming Marine Transport Group, who has provided an update on the situation.

“Please be advised that Turkey’s Directorate General of Coastal Safety has just obtained the cargo value assessment report from its own source,” Yang Ming said.

“We are trying our best working with related parties to solve the situation we are facing. This is a very difficult case and your understanding is appreciated.”
