Asmari Herry has been tasked with building up Samudera Indonesia Group’s domestic shipping business in Indonesia as part of a management reshuffle.

He will step down in September as chief executive of the group's Singapore-listed vehicle – Samudera Shipping Line — to take up the new role.

Industry veteran and long-time Samudera executive Banui Mulia will take over the CEO post at the Singapore subsidiary.

“Mr Bani brings with him nearly two decades of industry experience, having started out working in the group as a finance officer in 2001,” Samudera said.

“Since then, he has taken on various roles and responsibilities within the group before being appointed as a board member in 2009, and then as its president director in June 2020.”

Bani currently also serves as the vice chairman of sea transportation permanent committee at the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN).

He also serves in the role as transportation and energy committee member at the Indonesian Employers Association (APINDO).

Samudera Shipping Line chairman Masli Mulia said Herry had “done a fantastic job” positioning the company for long-term success over his seven years as CEO.

He described the leadership transition during this period as “timely and important”, to ensure continuity of the line’s brand and service standards.

“I am confident that Bani’s years of experience in the industry will prime him well to chart a sustainable growth path for the company in the post-Covid shipping era,” Mulia said.

Along with its appointment of a new CEO, Samudera Shipping Line has also announced several changes to its board composition with effect from 1 September 2020.

Non-executive directors Lim Kee Hee and Chng Hee Kok will step down from the board to serve as advisors to the company.

As a result non-executive director Nicholas Ballas will take over from Chng as chairman of the board’s remuneration committee, the shipowner said.
