MPC Container Ships' chief financial officer Harald Wilke has resigned after sealing the German company's refinancing during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Wilke will leave at the end of the year and be replaced by Benjamin Pfeifer on 1 January.

Pfeifer brings to the company a corporate finance background from various industries, the Oslo-listed shipowner said.

He will join from Luxembourg-based retail consultancy Garant Holding International, where he is CFO and a board member.

Pfeifer, who holds a doctorate of economics from the European Business School in Germany, has also served as managing director at publisher Weltbild, portfolio manager at CD Capital and investment manager at the C Deilmann group.

Restructuring complete

Wilke spent two years as MPCC finance chief, after joining from the ThyssenKrupp group.

He helped steer MPCC through a liquidity crunch caused by the coronavirus pandemic earlier this year, which meant a new share issue and the restructuring of bonds to avoid what the company called a "fire sale" of ships.

MPC told TradeWinds that Wilke is leaving to pursue an opportunity outside the containerships industry.

Chief executive Constantin Baack said the company is now "well-positioned to benefit from a much-anticipated market rehabilitation".

"The world is navigating unchartered waters of extreme uncertainty and hence the market remains fragile," he added.

MPCC reported a net loss of $17.6m in the second quarter, up from $6.4m in the previous year.

Revenue was $39.1m for the period, against $46m in the year before.
