A Cosco boxship was detained in Indonesia for nearly a month over "security concerns", the Chinese company has revealed.

The Bisnis website cited Cosco Shipping Lines Indonesia's deputy managing director Hendra Kusuma as saying the 4,250-teu Seaspan Fraser (built 2010) was finally released on Thursday.

It was carrying 1,700 boxes of exports from East Java and is chartered from Seaspan for a Surabaya to Singapore feeder service.

The vessel has now reached Singapore.

Kusuma said it was held in Tanjung Uban by the Indonesian navy after leaving Tanjung Perak on 29 September.

The report claims the detention was carried out for security reasons, but does not elaborate.

Kusuma said he was not involved in the matter, because Seaspan was handling it.

Two Cosco tanker companies have been sanctioned by the US for alleged Iranian trading, but in theory this should not affect chartered feedership services.

Kusuma added that cargo includes agricultural and fisheries goods in reefer containers. But he could not guarantee its condition after the delay.

Seaspan has been contacted for comment.
