Pro-Palestine protestors have picketed a US office of Israeli container line Zim as part of nationwide protests following the recent conflict in Gaza.

Members of the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) group spent 45 minutes outside the Romulus base in Michigan on 8 June, the Detroit Jewish News reported.

Chants of "Free, Free Palestine" could be heard, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Banners at the rally read "#SanctionIsrael" and "Stop US Funding of Israeli Apartheid".

The protest was part of a national effort called Block the Boat, which aims to disrupt Zim's operations in the country.

Oakland success

On 4 June, a group of protesters in Oakland, California, claimed they had stopped Zim's 4,254-teu Volans (built 2009) from unloading after port workers declined to cross their picket line.

Block the Boat organisers have also lined up protests in New York City and Philadelphia.

There have already been demonstrations in Vancouver and London.

In May, dockers in Durban, South Africa, refused to unload a boxship chartered by Zim due to the conflict between the Israeli government and Palestinian militant group Hamas.

Members of the South African Trade and Allied Workers’ Union boycotted the 4,992-teu Zim Shanghai (built 2002), owned by Costamare, the IOL website reported.

The company did not mention the protests in a statement given to London-based Middle East Eye.

But Zim said: "Due to operational constraints and long delays in the Port of Oakland, and in order to meet schedule departures in the Far East, we will be calling on other US west coast ports until further notice."
