Finnish shipyard Meyer Turku has again postponed the hand-over of a giant Carnival cruiseship due to its "complexity."

The shipbuilder said the 181,000-gt Costa Smeralda will now be delivered in time for a first voyage on 21 December from Savona in Italy.

"The delay is due to the high complexity and the sheer size of the ship project," it added.

The vessel was originally due in mid-October, but this was put back to mid-November last month.

At that time, the yard said: "With its new cruiseship LNG propulsion system and many sophisticated rooms with stage and audio/video equipment the complexity and sophistication of the ship is very high in order to create a unique Costa-style passenger experience.

"Aside from its unique design features also its size of 180,000-gt is impressive and much larger than the recently built ships at Turku shipyard."

It added: "In getting this all to work together with many involved persons and companies, Meyer Turku had a slower progress speed than needed, despite counter-actions."

Earlier this month it emerged that the shipyard was hit by 21 cases of pneumococcal pneumonia among workers finishing off the vessel.

Vaccinations were being carried out at the yard.

The company is building seven large cruiseships for Royal Caribbean, Carnival and TUI.
