The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection is facing a delay in getting its hands on its first luxury cruiseship.

The US cruiseship owner said it will launch its service on 13 June, four months later than originally planned.

The company blamed challenges at Spain's Hijos de J Barreras shipyard in terms of delivery and project costs.

In a statement to Cruise Industry News, the shipowner said: "With additional challenges around the former shipyard management, both the new board of Hijos de J Barreras and the board of The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection are working cooperatively towards a long-term solution for the shipyard."

The first of a potential trio of 298-passenger vessels is scheduled to leave Barcelona in June on a seven-night cruise to Palma de Mallorca.

February launch scrapped

In August, Ritz-Carlton was still saying the first trip would be going ahead in February, following scheduled delivery in the fourth quarter of this year.

It has not revealed a timeline for the other vessels in the series.

Hijos de J Barreras shipyard has been contacted for comment.

In June, the shipyard said it had clinched the second unit, with a third option remaining.

The first vessel was agreed in 2017. No price has been revealed.

The yard has called the design, which was developed in cooperation with the owner and Tillberg Design of Sweden, "amazing".

The Maltese-flagged vessels will accommodate 544 people, including 298 passengers in 149 suites and 246 crew members, with a maximum speed of 17.8 knots.

Ritz-Carlton is teaming up with Oaktree Capital Management on the project.
