NYK has ordered a scrubber-fitted newcastlemax bulker on the back of a long-term charter from Japanese steelmaker JFE Steel.

Japan Marine United is set to build the 211,000-dwt vessel, with delivery set for 2021. The charter rate and duration were not disclosed.

Next generation

NYK said the “next-generation energy-saving” bulker will be compliant with the IMO's Tier III NOx emission regulations and 2020 sulphur cap.

“It will have a larger cargo space than a conventional ship, leading to improved fuel economy,” NYK said.

“The ship’s carbon dioxide emissions also meet the stricter Phase 2 Energy Efficiency Design Index requirements entering into force in 2020.”

Under NYK’s most recent medium-term management plan it aims to secure stable freight rates through long-term contracts and to operate environment-friendly ships.
