Kuala Lumpur-based MISC Berhad has secured an inaugural listing on the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI).

The hydrocarbons shipping giant is the only Malaysian transportation sector company to feature in the DJSI Emerging Markets Index.

MISC president and group CEO Datuk Yee Yang Chien described the listing as a significant milestone in the company's decade-long sustainability journey, and said it strengthened the company's commitment to "raise the bar".

"We are extremely proud to be recognised by DJSI for our commitment in environmental stewardship, sound corporate governance practices as well as generating positive impact to our various stakeholders," Yee said.

"Our decisions and actions in the years to come will continue to be structured around our sustainability agenda, driven by the concerted effort of our employees, businesses and partners, and guided by our aspiration of moving energy to build a better world."

Launched in 1999, the indices provide best-in-class benchmarks for investors who integrate sustainability considerations into their portfolios.

They track the stock performance of the world's leading companies in terms of economic, environmental and social criteria and apply a transparent, rules-based component selection process. This is based on a company's total sustainability score resulting from the annual S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment.

Only the top ranked companies within each industry are selected for inclusion. A total of 108 global companies feature on the DJSI Emerging Markets Index this year.

Manjit Jus, global head of ESG Research at S&P Global said: "A DJSI distinction is a reflection of being a sustainability leader in your industry. The record number of companies participating in the 2021 S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment is testament to the growing movement for ESG disclosure and transparency."

MISC, which operates one the world's largest LNG carrier fleets and is a major tanker player through its Singapore-based subsidiary AET, was one of the first shipping companies build LNG-powered tankers.

The company is an active participant in numerous industry organisations and initiatives seeking solutions for the decarbonisation of the shipping.
