Italy's d’Amico International Shipping (DIS) has announced the death of board director Heinz Peter Barandun.

The tanker owner said it was deeply saddened by the veteran shipping banker's death.

Barandun joined the company in 2009 as an independent director.

Paolo d’Amico, DIS chairman and CEO, said: “It is with great sadness that I announce today the passing of Heinz Barandun.

"Heinz leaves a great legacy of incredible business acumen, knowledge and personal relationships and I will be forever grateful for his dedication and commitment in serving our board of directors for over 10 years.

"It has been a privilege for me and the other board members to work alongside Heinz and he will be greatly missed.”

MarketScreener gave his age as 79, but DIS was unable to confirm this.

Between 1958 and 1968, he worked at UBS Lugano, Den Danske Landmandsbank in Copenhagen, and Nestle.

He then started working for Citibank in Geneva, and later in Piraeus and Zurich where, between 1978 and 1983, he was responsible for Citibank’s ship lending activity in continental Europe, excluding Greece and northern Europe.

Barandun was division head of corporate banking in Switzerland until 1984, and one of 300 senior credit officers, which is the highest level worldwide for credit approval authority at Citi

After leaving the bank he started his own company, Fincor Finance, and joined the lender's board, on which he served until 2008.

He remained chairman of Fincor, and was also chairman of Gryphon Hidden Values IX and a director of HPB Editeur and Laredo Holding.
