John Angelicoussis has returned to his favourite South Korean shipbuilder to order another LNG carrier newbuilding.

Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) confirmed the order for Maran Gas in a statement on Thursday.

The 174,000-cbm newbuilding will be delivered from DSME’s Okpo shipyard in the last quarter of 2021. Financial terms were not disclosed.

DSME said the LNG carrier will be equipped with in-house designed Advanced Partial Re-liquefaction System (A-PRS).

"Maran Gas is one of the largest customers of DSME, and has ordered six of the seven LNG carriers ordered at DSME this year, and is currently discussing additional orders for LNG carriers," the shipbuilder said.

Meanwhile, DSME said it has now secured orders for the year-to-date for 17 vessels worth around $3bn, comprised of seven LNG carriers, seven VLCCs and three submarines.

Earlier this week, John Fredriksen’s Flex LNG said the number of LNG carriers in excess of 125,000-cbm had passed the 500 ship mark in the second quarter of 2019.

It said the order book at the end of the quarter amounted to 106 conventional LNG carriers, of which 43 were reported as ‘uncommitted’.

Despite the fleet passing the 500-ship mark Flex LNG said the outlook for LNG shipping demand was “compelling” due to rapidly increasing demand for LNG.
