Turkey’s Karpowership has signed an agreement with the Energy Company of Ukraine over the possible use of floating power vessels to help provide electricity to supply the nation’s power needs.
Karpowership said it has inked a memorandum of understanding with the state-owned energy entity “to enhance electricity supply cooperation and to help alleviate the nation’s energy crisis”.
The company is considering locating one or more of its units off the coasts of Moldova and Romania so electricity could be supplied to neighbour Ukraine’s grid from these countries.
Karpowership wants to develop and finance around 500 MW of power supply, which it said would be sufficient to supply 1m homes.
Ukraine is suffering severe power outages after a continued barrage of missile attacks by Russia on the country’s energy infrastructure.
But the powerships are large units, which could become fresh targets unless located outside Ukraine.
Karpowerhip chief commercial officer Zeynep Harezi said: “Powerships are a fast, reliable, and flexible solution to the nation’s electricity shortages, and we are ready to support Ukraine in getting the energy it needs as soon as possible.”
Energy Company of Ukraine chief executive Vitaly Butenko said: “While the war continues, building new power units to recover lost or damaged generation capacity is not a feasible option and we need to look for innovative solutions to the current crisis.”
