Shell Gas & Power Developments and Qatar Petroleum’s Wave LNG Solutions have come together in an effort to boost worldwide LNG fuelling capacity.

Both companies announced Wednesday that they will invest in marine fuelling, bunkering ships and other infrastructure but were scant on further details.

"We are currently reviewing potential locations and infrastructure requirements; it would be premature to comment more on this now," spokeswoman Anna Golub told TradeWinds.

"We will work together to make LNG available for distribution by barge to marine fuel customers."

They will carry out the investments at existing Qatar Petroleum and Shell supply positions and add more Shell LNG bunkering posts in Europe, Asia and North America, Shell said.

The company would not give a time frame or cost figures related to the initiative, which is being undertaken to help customers choose LNG as an IMO 2020-compliant fuel.

"Our joint objective is to accelerate the use of marine LNG by adding bunkering locations to the map," Golub said.

"By doing so, we will strengthen customer confidence that they can rely on availability of marine LNG in key hubs globally."

Shell signed a 2017 agreement with Wave LNG Solutions and two 2016 memoranda of understanding with Qatargas to explore Middle East LNG bunkering opportunities.
