A fire on an Angelicoussis bulker off the coast of Brazil has left the vessel’s captain dead, Greece’s coastguards said in a statement on Friday.

There were no other injuries or environmental damage.

The blaze broke out in the early morning hours on the 276,600-dwt Ore Sudbury's (built 1991) third accommodation deck. It was extinguished by the crew.

However, the 40-year-old captain was retrieved unconscious, the statement said.

Local authorities were promptly alerted, the Greek coastguards said.

The incident took place at the region of Guaiba, in southern Brazil. A total of 27 crew members were onboard the Ore Sudbury at the time of the accident, including nine Greeks.

The Greek-flagged ship is the oldest unit in the fleet of John Angelicoussis company Maran Dry.
