Former protection and indemnity and hull insurance specialist John Betz has joined recently formed brokerage McGill and Partners in New York.

Betz is the latest addition to a fast-growing marine team at the brokerage that includes many former JLT brokers in its ranks.

Betz formerly founded his own marine insurance company B&P International before selling to Gallagher in 2004. He then headed the blue and brown water marine business at JLT Specialty in the US but left the firm following its acquisition by Marsh.

McGill and Partners was launched in 2019 as a specialist boutique insurance and reinsurance broker for clients with complex needs.

It is headed by chief executive officer Steve McGill, an insurance industry veteran.

The broker has the backing of financial services private equity firm Warburg Pincus.

It has already taken on close to 200 employees and is the first broker to operate out of the Lloyds of London building in the City of London.

The marine team, which covers all areas of marine insurance, is made up of 12 brokers and is headed by former JLT broker David Smith.

Betz will work with the London team as the New York representative of the hull and marine liabilities practice.

This story has been amended since publication to reflect that McGill and Partners has a marine insurance team of 12 brokers.
