Experienced insurance specialist Peter Townsend is joining Miller to grow its North American business.

The UK-based marine insurance and reinsurance broking company said Townsend will start in January, focusing on the marine portfolio, which encompasses hull and machinery, protection and indemnity, transport liabilities, war risks, cargo and stock throughput cover.

Townsend is the founder of his own Ensign Consultancy and has served as chairman of the Joint Hull Committee.

He is a member of both the Lloyd’s Marine Association and the IUMI Ocean Hull Committee.

In June 2018, TradeWinds reported that Townsend and his team lost their jobs as AmTrust decided to withdraw from marine.

Townsend was head of marine underwriting for AmTrust’s syndicate 1206.

“We believe Peter’s experience and expertise in the marine insurance industry will enhance Miller’s proposition for our clients," said Phil Wheeler, head of marine at Miller.

"His invaluable technical input, built up over a number of years, will further strengthen the Miller team and support our aim of providing an unrivalled service to our clients.”

UK-based Miller focuses on complex commercial insurance, reinsurance and delegated authority business.

Headquartered in London, it has more than 600 staff worldwide.
