Yang Ming Marine Transport has declared general average on a chartered containership that ran aground near Istanbul last December.

It has appointed adjuster Richards Hogg Lindley (RHL) to oversee the general process following the incident involving the 2,000-teu Songa Iridium (built 2008).

The ship was heading to the Port of Istanbul just after Christmas when it suffered an engine room fire, lost power and subsequently ran aground.

The Liberia-flagged vessel, which is laden with 1,499-teu, was subsequently towed and then escorted by tugs to the Ahirkapi anchorage.

Yang Ming said salvors thereafter demanded either salvage security or salvage award for their services rendered and then promptly detained the vessel.

The Taiwanese shipowner said that after “extensive negotiations” with salvors a settlement was made and the cargo and containers were subsequently released.

Yang Ming said it was now arranging the vessels for forwarding the containers to their respective destinations.

As a consequence the shipowner said it was exercising a lien against the cargo and containers to recover the costs, expenses and associated charges incurred in relation to the salvage claim.

The shipowner said further notice will be provided in due course covering the full details of the security requirements.
