Dimitris Papoulis, Pioneer Marine's chief operating officer, has assumed the position of chief executive, replacing Torben Janholt.

Janholt, who has led Pioneer since inception as a board member, "has decided to end his journey and pursue his personal objectives", the company said.

He will also step down from the board of directors, effective tomorrow. Chief financial officer Korinna Tapaktsoglou will take his seat on the board.

He was chief executive for three years and a board member for seven years.

Papoulis joined the Greek bulker owner as vice president of chartering when the company was founded in 2013. He served in that role through 2018 before becoming operating chief last year.

"Dimitris was the former COO of Pioneer and he comes from an impressive career background with over 20 years of experience in the dry bulk industry," Pioneer said in a statement.

"He has long-standing experience in liaising with all major grain houses and charters worldwide and we are confident that he will bring significant value to the company, building on the organization’s existing strengths and boosting its development plans even further."

Oslo-listed Pioneer noted Papoulis' contributions to installing ballast-water treatment systems on several of its ships as one of his greatest accomplishments with the company.

The company owns 16 handysize bulkers.

This story has been amended since publication to reflect that Torben Janholt was chief executive for three years and that the company owns 16 handysize bulkers.
