Norway's Boa Offshore is reactivating two laid-up anchor-handlers for a government charter.

It said the Norwegian Defence Logistic Organisation (FLO) will use the 285-bp Boa Bison (built 2014) and 267-bp Boa Jarl (built 2015) for emergency response preparedness from 1 January.

The bareboat deals last five years, with five years of renewal options.

The company had been trying to sell the ships without success.

"These are vessels that will contribute significantly to the Coast Guard’s ability to solve missions," said Coast Guard commander Ottar Haugen.

"Boa is very pleased to win this contract which utilises high-standard offshore tonnage for an important purpose, strengthening the national emergency response," said Boa CEO Helge Kvalvik.

Both vessels have spent the majority of their time in service trading the North Sea spot market, Seabrokers said.

But they have both been laid up in Poland since late 2018 following the completion of their most recent contracts with Gazprom off Russia.
