McAllister Towing has brought on a new tugboat to handle big boxships coming in and out of US port of Charleston, North Carolina.

The 6,770-bhp Capt. Jim McAllister (built 2019) is the New York-based owner's fourth tug in a series of four 80 metric-tonne bollard pull tugboats and 33rd tractor in its 57-strong fleet.

The tug is powered by 3516E Tier IV Caterpillar engines with twin Schottel SRP4000FP units able to achieve 82.5 metric tonnes during ABS bollard pull certification with maximum pull of 83.7 tonnes.

Capt. Jim McAllister, which joins sister tugs Capt. Brian, Rosemary and Ava McAllister as the fleet's most powerful EPA Tier IV tugs, was delivered from Eastern Shipbuilding Tuesday.

“We are excited and proud to be able to bring the newest level of service to our customers in Charleston," Capt. Steven Kicklighter, McAllister’s vice president and general manager, said in a statement.

"We are receiving 14,000-teu containerships on an almost daily basis," he said.

"This tug, with her capabilities, will be able to safely handle these ships and even larger ones with exceptional control and power."

It is named after James P. McAllister, a family ancestor who joined the company in 1885.
