Seajacks has secured its debut contract in Japan to install turbine foundations on a wind farm project in the Sea of Japan.

The company, which is jointly owned by Marubeni Corp, Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) and the Innovation Network Corporation of Japan (INCJ), has secured the contract from Kajima Corp.

Work will be carried out an offshore wind farm project at Akita Port and Noshiro Port in the Akita Prefecture, in the northwest of the country.

This project, in which Marubeni is an investor, is expected to be the first bottom-fixed large-scale offshore wind power project in Japan funded 100% on a commercial basis.

Seajacks will utilize its large wind installation vessel Seajacks Zaratan (built 2012) for the project which is scheduled to start some time in 2021.

Seajacks owns five offshore wind installation vessels, including one of the world’s largest vessels called the Seajacks Scylla (built 2015), and it has installed more than 450 wind turbines primarily in European waters.

In Asia, Seajacks signed Taiwan’s first offshore turbine installation contract in 2018 for the 120MW Formosa 1 Phase 2 offshore wind farm project.

It was the first offshore wind farm in Taiwan completed in 2019 on the basis of commercial financing.

In addition, Seajacks has secured two more contracts in Taiwan – the 376MW Formosa 2 offshore wind farm project and the 888MW Greater Changhua offshore wind farm project – which are due to begin installation in 2021 and 2022 respectively.
