Van Oord has become the latest shipowner to benefit from Taiwan’s huge investments in offshore wind technology.

The Dutch company has just secured a contract by Denmark’s Orsted for the cable installation works at the Greater Changhua 1 & 2a offshore wind farms.

Van Oord said it will be responsible for the transportation, installation and burial of the 111 inter array cables and three export cables.

To carry out the work, Van Oord will deploy its cable-layer Nexus (built 2014), equipped with a 5,000t capacity cable carousel.

This contract, which is due to see installation work start in 2021, will be the first cable project in Taiwan for Van Oord.

Once operational in 2022, the windfarms will contribute significantly to the Taiwanese government’s target of 5.7 GW offshore wind by 2025.

“As the Taiwanese offshore wind market begins to expand, we are committed to support the further development of the Taiwanese supply chain and marine workforce by sharing our experience and knowledge in these fields,” Van Oord said.

Van Oord secured its first offshore wind contract in Taiwan in May last year with work on the 640 megawatts Yulin project.

“In Asia, and especially in Taiwan, large investments are being made in offshore wind. The Yunlin project is a great opportunity for Van Oord to show our expertise outside Europe,” chief executive Pieter van Oord said at the time.
