Danish towage company Svitzer has brought in a new chief operating officer from parent AP Moller-Maersk.

Ingrid Uppelschoten Snelderwaard will take on the role from 1 December. She will replace Leonardo Sonzio, who will become Maersk's head of fleet operations.

Uppelschoten Snelderwaard is global head of equipment and a vice president at Maersk.

She holds a degree in economics and languages from Hogeschool Zeeland, and a degree in business management from Nyenrode University, in the Netherlands.

The executive has previously been managing director for Maersk in eastern central Europe, and trade manager on North America to Mediterranean routes.

Uppelschoten Snelderwaard said she is excited by the appointment.

Digital mission

"Svitzer has a great history, shown by a strong track record of high performance, and is committed to creating the right customer experience and engagement to secure value for our partners," she added.

The new COO said she wants to use digital technology to perform better internally and externally.

The move follows the appointment of new chief executive Kasper Friis Nilaus in May.

The CEO said: "Today, innovative thinking and a digital mind set is crucial to succeed as a global towage operator and this is precisely what Ingrid stands for."

Nilaus added the new recruit brings extensive commercial and operational experience.

"Beyond running operations with a strong eye on safety and efficiency, Ingrid applies a digital, innovative mindset and approach to her work and leadership," he said.

"We aim to leverage technologies and find new ways of doing business to support our customers’ needs, now and in the future, and Ingrid is a great match for this mission."

Uppelschoten Snelderwaard will be based in Copenhagen.

Nilaus, who has been with Svitzer since 2007, said: "I am confident that Ingrid is the right person to take over from Leonardo Sonzio.

"While I am, of course, sad to see Leonardo leave Svitzer, I am also proud that he is moving on to a significant role at Maersk."
