US Maritime Administration head Mark Buzby has stepped down from his position in response to last week's riots at the US Capitol.

The agency responsible for developing the country's commercial shipping industry confirmed Buzby had resigned the role last week.

"I no longer believe that I am able to serve as a member of the administration while remaining true to the values which have been the core of my service to the people of our nation," Buzby said in a statement.

A retired rear admiral, Buzby took over as maritime administrator in August 2017.

A graduate of the US Merchant Marine Academy, Buzby served in the US Navy with the Sixth Fleet, US Fleet Forces Command and the Joint Staff. He was head of the Military Sealift Command from October 2009 to March 2013.

Buzby's resignation comes after Elaine Chao, head of the US Department of Transportation of which the Maritime Administration is a part, was the first member of President Donald Trump's cabinet to step down.

Chao's move came in the aftermath of the riot at the US Capitol by Trump's supporters, who were looking to interrupt the certification results that elevated former senator and vice president Joe Biden to the White House.

During the insurrection, some were able to breach the building, sending legislators running for cover.

Five died in the incident, with dozens hurt and hundreds charged with crimes.

The International Organization of Masters, Mates and Pilots (MM&P) described Buzby as a "strong advocate for America's merchant mariners" in a statement on social media regarding his resignation.

“He is first and foremost a mariner: a true leader and meticulous professional who looks after his crew and accomplishes his mission," MM&P president Don Marcus said.

“He has done a fantastic job throughout his career, in the very highest traditions of the US Navy and of service to the American people.”
