Ten people were injured when a fire raged through an ASDP Indonesia Ferry ro-pax yesterday.

The 560-gt ro-pax ferry KMP Sembilang (built 2011) was on a slipway at the PT Karimun Marine Shipyard in the port of Tanjung Balai at the time the fire broke out.

The injured are reported to have suffered burns and were taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Video footage shows the fire spreading rapidly through the vessel while workers on an adjacent ferry flee out of fear it would spread to their vessel.

Firefighters managed to extinguish the blaze after several hours, but the ship was left a gutted wreck.

ASDP is Indonesia’s largest privately-owned ferry company, with a fleet of in excess of 100 ro-pax ferries, most of which are small open-deck ferries that operate short-distance inter-island routes.

The country's ferry industry has a notoriously poor safety record, with vessels frequently burning or capsizing.
