Anglo-Eastern chief executive Captain Bjorn Hojgaard has been confirmed as the new chairman of the Hong Kong Shipowners Association (HKSOA).

This is only the second time a non-shipowner has held the role. The first time was in 2007 with the appointment of Peter Cremers, also of Anglo-Eastern.

Hojgaard, who has been the association’s deputy chairman for the past two-years, succeeds Oak Maritime’s Jack Hsu as chairman of the HKSOA.

The transition in leadership was formally announced at the HKSOA Annual Cocktail Reception late last week, which also saw Valles Steamship’s Wellington Koo named as deputy chairman.

“It is an honour and a privilege to be able to lead the Hong Kong Shipowners Association as chairman into the next decade,” said Hojgaard.

Boosting Hong Kong

“As a major trade association representing the local shipping industry, the HKSOA always strives to promote its members’ interests and augment Hong Kong’s role as a leading maritime centre, which I am committed to furthering in tandem with shaping a better maritime future.”

Last week’s HKSOA cocktail reception also marked the launch of the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) China liaison office, which will be hosted by the HKSOA.

This is the chamber’s first overseas office outside of London, and is said to represents a milestone for both the ICS and HKSOA.

“With the establishment of our new liaison office, I greatly look forward to continuing the good co-operation that exists between the members of ICS and the Chinese maritime community,” said ICS chairman Esben Poulsson.

“I very much hope this will further enhance the ability of China to contribute towards positive outcomes during future regulatory discussions about global shipping.”

Hojgaard added: “In the years ahead, we look forward to working closely with the ICS and all the stakeholders in this collaboration to advance the interests of the shipping community on all fronts, and to seize new opportunities to reach new heights of achievement.”
