Grieg Shipbrokers' gas carrier division is swallowing up a fellow Norwegian brokerage as it continues its expansion in the sector.

The company has taken over Xenon Shipbroking, controlled by industry veteran Jan Krister Platou.

The move adds two brokers to the Grieg gas shipping team: Platou and his son Jan Rasmus, who has been with the firm since 2016.

Xenon started in 1992 with six shipbrokers who had left Stemoco Shipping.

Jan Krister Platou is understood to have a particularly strong relation with Japanese trader Mitsui & Co in the petrochemcial business.

Grieg director Tore Gaarden said the two employees from Xenon complement each other and the rest of the company's existing gas team very well.

Grieg now has 12 people in the division following the addition of the Xenon duo..

Gaarden stressed that the gas department of Grieg is highly diversified and is involved with all kind of projects, spot market charters, sale and purchase deals and newbuilding business. In addition, demolition is getting increasingly important, Gaarden said.

Grieg’s gas department is now among the three leading gas carrier broking firms in Norway, alongside Steem 1960 and Fearnleys.

The company entered the gas business as late as in 2010.
