Damen Shipyards is sticking to the adage "waste not, want not" with an online auction of spare parts.

The Dutch shipbuilder has brought in Troostwijk Auctions to sell pumps, winches, engines and catering equipment, with bids closing on 4 November.

"Damen Shipyards is doing this auction of ship materials from a sustainability point of view," the company said.

The yard group sometimes has material left over from shipbuilding, but does not throw this away.

"The surplus materials are kept for reuse, and when this is not possible, Damen Shipyards offers the materials a second life through an online auction. And that's only good for you as a buyer. You can buy ship materials at a price you decide," it added.

A diverse offering

The auction includes ropes, wooden construction materials, screws and VHF radios.

Lots can be viewed on 3 November in the western city of Gorinchem.

Damen Shipyards has been designing, building and repairing ships since 1927.

The family-owned business was one of the first to apply standardisation and serial production to shipbuilding.

This is still its main focus more than 6,000 ships later, as the need for sustainability and digitalisation is increasing, the company believes.

"So Damen Shipyards aims to become the world's most sustainable shipbuilder," it said.

In April, the company moved into shipowning in a new leasing venture with US alternative financier EnTrust Global.

The yard group and EnTrust's Purus Marine are forming a joint venture to own and lease out environmentally advanced newbuildings to help operators with energy transition financing.
