Dutch offshore and dredging group Van Oord has moved to strengthen its position in the offshore wind sector with a new green ship order.

The owner has picked Vard in Norway to build a 10,000-gt cable-layer for delivery in 2023. No price has been given.

Van Oord is a leader in laying and burying power lines for turbines.

The order "highlights Van Oord’s drive to continuously reinforce its market position by investing in state-of-the-art sustainable technology," the company said.

Biofuel and batteries

The ship will be prepared to run on biofuel, and will have a battery pack, a shore supply connection and a state-of-the-art energy management system.

Van Oord is committed to reducing CO2 emissions to become carbon-neutral by 2050.

Chief executive Pieter van Oord said: "Our ambition is to contribute to our customers achievements, through environmentally friendly vessels and technological solutions focusing on safety, sustainability and efficiency performance, and we are looking forward to developing this cable-layer together with Van Oord."

Vard CEO Alberto Maestrini explained the vessel will have a cable-carrying capacity of 8,000 tonnes.

The Dutch-flagged new ship will be the group's second cable-layer.
