Nicholas Inglessis and daughters Ismini and Alexia have separated their interests from traditional family company Samos Steamship to establish a new outfit that has made its first purchase.

The venture, Alberta Shipmanagement, was formally registered with Greek authorities in March. It is understood to have begun operations during the summer in new offices in the Athens suburb of Chalandri.

Alberta Shipmanagement began life with a mixed fleet of four tankers and three bulkers previously managed by Samos Steamship, which is led by Antonis Inglessis and Yannis Inglessis.

According to the Greek Shipping Directory and Equasis, Alberta Shipmanagement’s tanker fleet consists of the 114,700-dwt Ambelos (built 2017), the 105,400-dwt Ambrosia (built 2006), the 47,300-dwt Papillon (built 2007) and the 47,300-dwt Petalouda (built 2008).

Its bulker fleet is made up of the 37,300-dwt handysize sisterships Sunrise, Sunset and Sunshine (all built 2009).

Alberta Shipmanagement maintains a predilection for tonnage built in Japan, as evidenced by the first purchase it has made outside the Samos Steamship fold.

Separation

Equasis shows the 33,600-dwt tanker Argent Cosmos (built 2009) as entering its fleet on 24 September under its new name, Liberty.

The Kitanihon Shipbuilding-constructed ship seems to have been purchased much earlier in the year, though. Some brokers reported it sold last February. Others said it changed hands in May, when Japan’s MOL reportedly sold it to unidentified buyers for about $18.5m.

Nicholas Inglessis, who is also chairman of the UK P&I Club, was on business travel and had not responded to an emailed request for comment by the time of writing.

The background to his split from Samos Steamship remains unclear. It is also unclear whether there has been any change to the role of Alberta Shipbrokers, the company that has been representing Samos Steamship in London.

The Inglessis family hails from the Aegean island of Samos. Its involvement with shipping stretches back nearly 150 years.

Nicholas Inglessis established Samos Steamship Co and Alberta Shipbrokers in 1991, alongside cousins Stamatis Inglessis and Antonis Inglessis. Samos Steamship’s website features five bulkers and 11 tankers on its fleet list, all built in Japan.
