Singapore has roped in some of the region’s top shipping CEOs to its international advisory panel (IAP) on maritime decarbonisation.

The panel, which held its inaugural meeting late last week, is co-chaired by BW Group chairman Andreas Sohmen-Pao and Sembcorp Marine president Wong Weng Sun.

Established by the Singapore Maritime Foundation (SMF) and supported by the Maritime and Port Authority (MPA), the IAP aims to “explore decarbonisation strategies, policies and actions to be taken by the local maritime sector”.

These are said to be in line with the International Maritime Organization’s 2050 target to reduce shipping’s total annual greenhouse gas emissions by at least 50%.

Key members of the IAP include Cargill Ocean Transportation president Jan Dieleman, Eastern Pacific Shipping CEO Cyril Ducau, Ocean Network Express (ONE) CEO Jeremy Nixon, CMB CEO Alexander Saverys, the CEO of Pacific Carriers Ltd (PCL) Hor Weng Yew and Pacific International Lines (PIL) executive director Teo Choo Wee.

There are also representatives on the IAP from ABS and DNV GL, the Baltic Exchange, PSA, Cosco Shipping, AP Moller-Maersk, Shell Eastern Trading and Wartsila.

“Decarbonisation is a multifaceted issue requiring different perspectives and collaborations,” said Wong.

“The IAP reflects this, and I look forward to robust discussions with the panel to see how Singapore can become a centre of excellence for maritime decarbonisation efforts.

“Sembcorp Marine is proud to support Singapore’s push for decarbonisation and we look forward to contributing our experience from developing low-carbon engineering products and solutions for the global markets, and from our ongoing efforts to tap solar power in our yard operations.”

The inaugural meeting, which was held via video conference, was also joined by IMO secretary general Kitack Lim and Singapore’s senior minister of state for transport and health Dr Lam Pin Min.
