India’s Apeejay Shipping is joining in the fight to prevent illegal animal trafficking.

The bulker owner has signed up to the Buckingham Palace Declaration led by the UK’s Prince William.

The Economic Times cited chairman Karan Paul as saying: "The illegal wildlife trade is a direct threat to species and goes against the stability and diversity of our biosphere.

“Apeejay Shipping, as a major sea transportation service provider, commits its fleet and our people to being vigilant and to use our information network.”

Commitments in the declaration include developing information sharing systems, supporting a secure system for passing information about suspected illegal wildlife trade from the transport sector to relevant customs and law enforcement authorities, and notifying relevant law enforcement authorities of cargoes suspected of containing illegal wildlife and their products, as well as refusing to accept or ship such cargoes.
