The Indian government has pledged to remain committed to its assurances made at the recently concluded environment summit at Paris – COP 21 as it plans to use renewable energy at state-owned ports.

According to shipping ministry officials, under the Green India initiative, the government plans to increasingly use solar power at state-owned ports instead of fossil fuels in the coming years.

Under the initiative officials say, Vizag port on the east coast, will be the first port in India to install photovoltaic cells to generate power for the port.

According to the plans, the proposed solar plant will be of 15 MW, which will be installed in a phased manner with an initial capacity of 2 MW.

Besides Vizag, Paradip and Kolkata port on the east coast, Kandla and New Mangalore on the west coast are the additional ports that are slateded to install solar plants.

State-owned Solar Energy Corp will collaborate with the state-owned ports to assist with installing the solar photovoltaic cells.
