Mamidoil-Jetoil’s chairman Kyriakos Mamidakis committed suicide in his Athens home yesterday.

At the age of 84, Mamidakis was the leader of one of the leading fuel suppliers in the Balkans and the greater area.

Local police said he shot once towards the wall before turning the gun to himself.

His company Mamidoil-Jetoil has just filed for bankruptcy amid outstanding debts of EUR 314m ($349.5m) at the end 2015.

The company owned EUR 173m to banks and EUR 78m to other suppliers.

Besides the fuel industry, Mamidakis had built an empire with investments in hotels, cars, oil production and shipping.

The Mamidakis-controlled company Styga Compania Naviera is listed with one product carrier in its fleet, the 48,705-dwt Alexandros M (built 2000).

And another company linked to Mamidakis, Jet Tank Maritime owns five smaller bunker tankers.

Jetoil Bunkering, a subsidiary of Mamidoil-Jetoil, is one of the biggest shipping fuel supplier in Greece.
