Evangelos Marinakis is reported to be closing in on a deal to invest in struggling English football club Nottingham Forest.

The Greek shipowner is said to have recently held discussions with the chairman of the East Midlands club, Kuwaiti businessman Fawaz Al Hasawi.

Marinakis already controls top Greek football club Olympiacos, which has recently secured the Greek league title by a record margin.

Nottingham Forest officials have refused to comment officially on the situation, according to reports in The Nottingham Post.

However, the newspaper added that sources have confirmed that in the last few days talks have been held with more than one party over potential investment at the City Ground.

Nottingham Forest dominated English football in the late 1970s and early 1980s under the guidance of maverick manager Brian Clough.

It is 38 years since the unfancied side stunned the football word by winning the league title in their first season back in the top flight.

They went onto win the European Cup, a precursor of today’s Champions League, back to back in 1979 and 1980.

Many sports commentators are drawing comparisons between Nottingham Forest and Leicester City’s maiden league title which was secured on Monday.
