The start of construction of the proposed $50bn canal across Nicaragua has been delayed.

Hong Kong Nicaragua Development (HKND) pushed the start of works by a year until the end of 2016, according to various media reports.

The company said it is “optimising” the design of the proposed Panama Canal rival, although several newspapers have cited a decline in the net worth of Wang Jing, the Chinese billionaire who is proposing the project.

HKND started preliminary work on the canal in 2014.
