<p >An open discussion on how shipping can contribute to the issue of global climate change is underway in Paris this morning.</p><p >Shipping – Part of the Climate Solution is the theme of the one-day conference held by the International Chamber of Shipping, Armateurs de France and the Norwegian Shipowners’ Association with regulators and energy experts alongside the COP 21 governmental climate change talks.</p><p >Around 90% of the world’s traded goods are moved by ships that contribute to 2.2% of CO2 emissions, making shipping the most energy-efficient mode of transportation.</p><p >But there are calls for more to be done to improve the industry’s contribution to climate change mitigation.</p><p >The meeting will be opened by Gildas Maire, president of Armateurs de France and Sturla Henriksen, chief executive of the Norwegian Shipowners’ Association.</p><p >A keynote speech will follow from Segolene Royal, minister of ecology, sustainable development and energy for France.</p><p >From 11am a panel will discuss global regulations and shipping.</p><p >The panel includes Tine Sundtoft, minister for climate and environment, Norway; Nicolas Svenningsen, manager of the sustainable development mechanisms programme at UNFCC; Edmund Hughes, head of air pollution and energy efficiency at the IMO; Samantha Smith, leader of the WWF's global climate and energy initiative; and Peter Hinchliffe, ICS secretary general.</p><p >At 11.45am, a second panel will consider pioneering change and climate solutions.</p><p >Speakers will include Paul Simons, deputy executive director of the IEA; Jose Maria Figueres, co-chair, Global Ocean Commission; and Diane Gilpin, chief executive of Smart Green Ship Alliance.</p><p >It is also hoped that CMA CGM Group chief executive Jacques Saade will attend.</p></field><field name="byline">Paul Berrill in Paris</field><tag identifier="tag:newstopics@tradewindsnews.com,2012:pollution_and_environment" relevance="1.0"/><tag identifier="tag:newstopics@tradewindsnews.com,2012:regulation_and_legislation" relevance="1.0"/><tag identifier="tag:regions@tradewindsnews.com,2012:western_europe" relevance="1.0"/></content></escenic></div>
