The UK Chamber of Shipping has welcomed the appointment of Chris Grayling as new secretary of state for transport.
Grayling got the nod from the country’s new prime minister Theresa May on Thursday, replacing Patrick McLoughlin.
He was previously a shadow minister of transport for the Conservatives between 2005 and 2007 when Labour was in power.
The government reshuffle was prompted by the UK’s vote to leave the European Union last month, for which Grayling was a leading campaigner.
The Chamber said the shipping industry is “one of this country’s success stories, responsible for moving 95% of the UK’s international trade, with 250,000 people employed across maritime services.
“The UK is a world leader in shipping, ports, maritime training, law, finance, insurance and broking.
“We are determined to deliver prosperity to the UK, and we will work closely and innovatively with the new secretary of state as we identify the opportunities and challenges presented by Brexit."
