Striking Western India Shipyard (WISL) workers locked police into their shipyard after taking two interns hostage.

The Times of India said Mormugao officers had come on Saturday to rescue two workers held by employees for two days.

The interns were attached to an accountancy company and had been sent from WISL head office to carry out auditing work.

Nine police officers went to free them, but were locked in as workers protested.

The leader of the striking workers was called to the yard by police and the interns were eventually released.

They refused to press charges, as they were given food and not mistreated during the two-day ordeal.
