German manager Reederei Harmstorf has appointed Alexander Riecke as its second managing director.

The Hamburg company said he will run the firm and sister operation Thomas Meier-Hedde & Co KG together with Thomas Meier-Hedde.

Riecke has been with Harmstorf since 2010.

He was given power of attorney at the company in February 2017 and has been responsible for commercial aspects since then.

"I am very much looking forward to this role and its related tasks," Riecke said.

"I am convinced that we will continue the story of Harmstorf & Co in a positive way and that we will be able to navigate through these challenging times successfully."

Harmstorf was established in 2000 as an owner-managed shipping company.

Since 2012, Harmstorf has been in a partnership with the owner-managed Schlussel Reederei KG in Bremen.

It sold its last four boxships to MPC Container Ships over the last two years for more than $38m.

Harmstorf now manages them for the new owner.
