A containership has been severely damaged above the water line in a collision with a coal barge off Indonesia.

The Suara Kalbar website reported that the 558-teu Tanto Mitra (built 2016) sustained a gash measuring five metres in length and a metre in height to its bow outside Tabanio in South Kalimantan.

The barge was named as the MBP 1515, which was being pulled by the tug MBP 3208.

The head of the local search and rescue authority, Slamet Riyadi, told Suara Kalba that initial information indicated there were no casualties.

South Kalimantan police have begun an investigation into the accident.

Iswan Hasan, the barge's second officer, claimed the containership had lost control.

After the collision, the Tanto Mitra looked for a safe place to anchor.

After being made safe, the Tanto Mitra will head to Trisakti port to unload.
