A new Yang Ming Marine Transport boxship was flooded due to an error at a CSBC shipyard in Taiwan.

The incomplete front section of the vessel sank bulbous-bow first into the water at Kaohsiung on 28 November.

The vessel also developed a list.

A Yang Ming spokeswoman confirmed to TradeWinds the vessel was one of its series of 10 2,800-teu containerships under construction at CSBC, without commenting further.

Five of the ships remain at the yard for delivery this month and in 2021, according to Clarksons.

Tidal trouble

ET Today reported the shipbuilder as saying the incident was caused by a miscalculation of a high tide.

The yard said a dock door was opened while one ship was exiting and another was being moved.

The dock was quickly closed and no injuries were reported.

Witnesses were heard shouting: "The whole thing is going down! It's going down!"

Video footage showed tugs trying to move the hull. The vessel was eventually towed to a different dock to right it.
